The US Coast Guard Auxiliary, Flotilla 61 in Hampton, VA offers the Boating Skills and Seamanship course several times annually. The course is offered to the public and is designed for people with varying levels of boating experience. Typically, people attending the course range from little, or no boating experience, to people with 30 or 40 years of boating experience but are looking to increase their basic knowledge. All gain a significant increase in knowledge level. The course schedule is included below.
Our Boating Skills and Seamanship (BS&S) course is taught in one of two ways. The first is the full 13 lesson course, taught Monday and Thursday evenings 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. for seven weeks. Essentially, this consists of one lesson (chapter) from the BS&S text each evening. In this course format, students are typically registered and given books the first evening of the course, but may register and pick up books in advance.
The second method we offer the BS&S course is a condensed, but highly intense, one-day, all-day, 7 lesson (chapters) course. In this case, we use the same text and workbook as the 13 lesson course, but select 7 key chapters to teach in the one day session. This course is offered on a Saturday, once monthly through September 2000. Classes start promptly at 8:00 a.m. and run until approximately 7:00 p.m. (plus or minus an hour). Students who prefer to take the one-day course must pre-register and pick up books in advance. We recommend at least ten days prior to the class, but not less than five days prior. This provides students the opportunity to read the text material and review the Study Guide exercises prior to the class.
All courses will be taught at 102 South King Street (VA Tech Seafood Extension Building) in Hampton, VA. There is no charge for the BS&S course itself, but the Flotilla must recoup their cost for books. The text and workbook (Study Guide) set cost $30. If couples are taking the course together and wish to share the text, we highly recommend a second workbook/study guide at a cost of only $5. Books must be paid in full when picked up.
